IIT-JEE is conducted in two stages by the National Testing Agency and the IITs. JEE Main is the first stage, used for admission to NITs, IIITs and other centrally-funded technical institutes, and also acts as the qualifier for JEE Advanced — the second stage, which is the sole gateway to admission in the 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
JEE Main is held across two sessions each year (January and April), and candidates can appear in either or both, with the best of the two scores considered. It tests Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics at a level closely aligned with the CBSE/NCERT syllabus, and determines admission to NITs/IIITs as well as eligibility to sit for JEE Advanced.
JEE Advanced is conducted by a rotating IIT (IIT Roorkee for the 2026 cycle) and is open only to the top rank holders of JEE Main (roughly the top 2,50,000 candidates across all categories). It is significantly tougher and more conceptual than JEE Main, with a broader syllabus and varied question formats across two compulsory papers. Clearing JEE Advanced is the only route to admission into an IIT, through JoSAA counselling.
Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Thermodynamics, Optics, and Modern Physics — tested at an application level in JEE Main and at a much deeper, multi-concept level in JEE Advanced, often combining two or three topics in a single question.
Physical, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry. JEE Main rewards strong NCERT-based recall, especially in Inorganic Chemistry, while JEE Advanced tests deeper reaction mechanisms and numerical problem-solving in Physical Chemistry.
Algebra, Calculus, Coordinate Geometry, Trigonometry, and Vectors & 3D Geometry. Mathematics is typically the most time-intensive subject in both JEE Main and JEE Advanced, rewarding speed, accuracy, and strong formula application.
| Subject | MCQs | Numerical |
|---|---|---|
| Physics | 20 | 5 (attempt any 5 of 10) |
| Chemistry | 20 | 5 (attempt any 5 of 10) |
| Mathematics | 20 | 5 (attempt any 5 of 10) |
Total: 90 questions, 300 marks, 3 hours. +4 for each correct answer, -1 for wrong MCQs; no negative marking on numerical-value questions.
Two compulsory papers (Paper 1 and Paper 2), each 3 hours, covering Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Question types vary by year and include single-correct MCQs, multiple-correct MCQs, numerical-value questions, and matrix-match questions, with variable and partial-marking schemes across sections.
Build your JEE Main foundation first — NCERT mastery plus consistent problem-solving across Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Once you're scoring comfortably in JEE Main mocks, shift focus to JEE Advanced-level problems that combine multiple concepts, since the 40–50 day gap between JEE Main and JEE Advanced is tight. Treat JEE Main as the qualifier and save peak preparation intensity for JEE Advanced.
Apex Academy's IIT-JEE test series includes separate mock patterns for JEE Main and JEE Advanced, subject-wise sectional tests, All-India ranking, and detailed solution walkthroughs for every test.
In-person daily classes at Apex Academy centres in Tenkasi and Tirunelveli, with faculty-led doubt clearing, regular classroom tests and personal mentoring.
Live-streamed JEE Main and Advanced classes with lifetime access to recordings, digital study material, and the same structured test series — accessible from anywhere.
Yes. Many candidates only target NITs/IIITs through JEE Main and do not attempt JEE Advanced.
A maximum of two attempts, in two consecutive years, subject to meeting the Class 12 and JEE Main rank eligibility each year.
Largely overlapping, but JEE Advanced includes additional topics and tests them at a deeper, more conceptual level than JEE Main.
