Primary Level Teaching — Exam Overview

TRB TET Paper 1 is conducted by the Teachers Recruitment Board, Tamil Nadu, to certify eligibility for teaching Classes I to V in government, government-aided and recognised private schools. TET is an eligibility test, not a direct recruitment exam — clearing it earns a lifetime-valid TET pass certificate, which is a mandatory requirement before appearing for UG TRB and other teacher recruitment exams in Tamil Nadu.

Eligibility

• Higher Secondary (12th) pass with at least 50% marks and a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed/TTC), OR
• Graduation with at least 50% marks and a 2-year Diploma in Elementary Education, OR
• Graduation with at least 50% marks and a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed), OR
• Senior Secondary with at least 50% marks and a 4-year Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed)

There is no upper age limit for appearing in TET, and the qualifying certificate is valid for a lifetime once cleared.

Total: 150 objective-type questions, 150 marks, OMR-based exam, 3 hours duration. There is no negative marking.

Syllabus Breakdown

Child Development & Pedagogy

Child development concepts for ages 6–11, learning and pedagogy, inclusive education, understanding diverse learners, and assessment for learning.

Language I

Comprehension passages, grammar, and pedagogy of language development in the chosen medium of instruction (Tamil or other listed languages).

Language II (English)

Comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, and the pedagogy of teaching English as a second language.

Mathematics

Number system, arithmetic, geometry, measurement, data handling, and pedagogical issues in teaching primary-level mathematics.

Environmental Studies

Family, food, shelter, water, travel, and pedagogical approaches to teaching EVS at the primary level.

Preparation Strategy

Focus equally across all five sections since each carries the same weight. Prioritize Child Development & Pedagogy and Environmental Studies early, as these are often under-prepared, and revise Mathematics formulas and Language grammar rules closer to the exam.
