About Group 1

Gateway to Tamil Nadu Administrative Services

The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission recruits for high-level administrative posts through Group 1. The preliminary paper is objective and screens candidates for the mains; its marks are not carried forward.

The main examination has four descriptive papers. Compulsory Tamil is a qualifying eligibility test, and the three General Studies papers at degree standard carry 250 marks each.

TNPSC Group 1 Selection Process

The recruitment runs in stages. The main examination and the oral test decide the final ranking.

Preliminary Examination

A screening test. Marks are used to shortlist candidates for the mains and are not added to the final total.

Compulsory Tamil Eligibility Test

Paper I of the mains, at 10th standard level. Candidates must qualify in it, but the marks are not counted for ranking.

General Studies Papers I, II and III

Three descriptive papers at degree standard, 250 marks each, covering nine units in all.

Interview and Oral Test

Candidates shortlisted on their mains marks are called for the applicable oral assessment.

Final Selection and Document Verification

The final list follows the mains and oral test marks, the rules in the notification, and verification of certificates.

Preliminary: single objective paper

200 questions. 175 on General Studies at degree standard and 25 on Aptitude and Mental Ability at SSLC standard. A screening stage only.

Main Paper III: General Studies II

250 marks. Indian polity and world political trends, science and technology, Tamil society and heritage.

 Main Paper I: Compulsory Tamil

100 marks, 10th standard, descriptive. Qualifying only: translation, precis, comprehension, letter and essay.

Main Paper IV: General Studies III

250 marks. Geography, environment and disaster management, and the Indian and Tamil Nadu economy.

Main Paper II: General Studies I

250 marks. Modern history and culture, social issues in India and Tamil Nadu, ethics and integrity.

Interview and oral test

Candidates shortlisted on their mains marks attend the applicable oral assessment before the final list.
